This photograph of banana leaves started my series of paintings in 2015. My photographer husband wanted to see his images REAL BIG. Knowing I love a good challenge, he handed me a photograph once a week and said, “I bet you can’t paint this.” He also said the fastest way to get me to do something was to say I couldn’t. He was wrong about the paintings but right about the personality.
He took this picture of banana leaves one of the first times we were in Hawaii. I never really understood why he loved it so much, and he’s dead now, so I can’t ask. Knowing him and how he treated this earth as sacred, I can only surmise that it was the reason.
Fast forward six years later, I was asked to create a sister painting to the Banana Leaves painting for the Netflix series Archive 81. There is a time-lapse video on my Instagram of me painting it for the set. I’ve never watched Archive 81, but maybe you’ve seen it? If you have, did you see these on the set? Tell me in the comments!
I’m sure that in the next few weeks, I will take many photographs of banana leaves and other lush, beautiful plants here on the island. It’s almost impossible not to take an incredible picture here. Please make sure you’re following me on my social media. I have a good giveaway coming up soon!
Until Next Time…
