The first time I ever went to Hawaii was in 2009. My husband, James Patrick Dames had just finished filming The Next Three Days with Russell Crowe, Liam Neeson and Elizabeth Banks. I had just wrapped up Love and Other Drugs with Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway. I am not 100 % sure but I think that was also around the time he was dating Taylor Swift. One of two times we would cross paths.
Patrick came home on Dec 19th and said, “Let’s go to Hawaii.” And we left December 24th. We stayed for two months in the middle of the jungle and I fell in love with the island. I mean how can you not?
The following days I would projectile vomit on NYE after getting sliced by some coral while chasing a sea turtle. I would accidentally find myself two football fields out in the ocean swimming with dolphins and whales. I would panic and almost drown. He would save my life, my mom’s and my brothers in the ocean that February.
I would climb through lava tubes and steam to the breathe the volcano. I would sleep under the stars on the lava flow and even save a little baby goat from my tent. I would camp on beaches and forever remember the very first time I saw a baby bird take flight.
The island would be a place I would continue to visit and eventually become the resting place for my husbands ashes. He is planted as a coconut tree on that island. Just like he wanted. Full circle. I will return to say hello to someone I had to say goodbye to. I will see the lava that has consumed more of the land and I will remember everything thing has it’s season. I will enjoy each sunset and immerse myself in the liquid aloha of life, again.
Until Next Time,
PS. If you want me to send you some Aloha, for a limited time you can order a Hawaii inspired 4×6 painting while I am on the island! Click here to order.
