Patrick found this really grainy image of a rosebud. It was about 2″x2″. He challenged me to paint it 5’x5′. At the time, I didn’t really find it THAT interesting, but what did interest me was his excitement about wanting it. And I do like to take little things and paint them big, especially little things that go unnoticed.
As I was painting it, I was thinking about this concept. How often do we forget to notice the small things in life that allow for so much beauty in the world as a whole? When we look out onto the landscape, the trees look like miniatures from a distance, and the flowers are tiny dots on the surface. A closer investigation shows so much detail.
Isn’t that like life? The tiny, delicate details of our lives are folded into the second hands on a clock until an hour, afternoon, and the entire day has passed. Pressed like flowers in the pages of the story of our lives. I don’t know about you, but this book never ends. I know this layered life experience, with its tiniest details, never stops revealing itself to me.
The Rose. A small, big reminder of all things barely noticed and undeniably present. Remember that when choosing your flowers for your friends, sweethearts, and others this Valentine’s Day. Remember all the ways the people you love have been present for you. And all the ways they keep showing up without being asked.
Until Next Time…
PS! I gave you peace with a Buddha, and now I would love to send you some ALOHA. Order a tiny painting below!
