I know Hawaiian sea turtles are not known for being dangerous; they are usually called the “gentle giants of the ocean,” but don’t let them fool you. I have a scar on my right leg from the first turtle I ever encountered. She came right up on me with a knife and, just like that, cut me right across my shin bone. When I started to bleed, I panicked a shark was going to find me and eat me.
Okay, I am being dramatic. Did I mention it was my first time snorkeling and had never been in this undersea world? I had no depth perception.
I was just snorkeling when the Hawaiian sea turtle came beside me. This honu had a distinctive appearance, with a large, streamlined shell and flippers that made her glide through the water like an eagle would in the sky.
She followed me for a bit, her 3.5-foot, 230-plus-pound body, with its shell holding the story of how she had navigated the sea for many years—a mosaic of colors, lines, and scars. I was fascinated—so much so that I did not notice the sharp coral right below me. So it was my own fault I got cut. Eventually, she swam away, and I got out of the water to superglue my wound.
I don’t know if you have ever tried to snorkel with contacts in, but it sucks. It makes my eyes water just thinking about it. When I returned to the States, I decided to get Lasik because of my experience with that turtle. The next time I visited Hawaii, I wanted to see everything underwater, especially the turtles.
My newfound sight and many snorkeling adventures later have made me understand the important role of sea turtles in Hawaiian culture. In ancient times, they were considered sacred creatures and were often depicted in Hawaiian art and mythology. They were also a valuable food source and were highly respected for their strength and resilience.
Today, when I see them, I am reminded that they are considered to be a symbol of good luck, longevity, and endurance—a symbol of the resilience and strength of the natural world. It is a wonder to me how something so small can make it in such a vast ocean. I wonder if aliens say that about us- It is a wonder that those humans make it in such a vast galaxy.
Until next time,
