Across the Pond is a 36×48″ mixed media painting inspired by my trip to Ireland circa 2013 and created while working on the film “Sweet Girl,” starring Jason Momoa. The original is hand painted with torn pages from a book I brought back from Ireland. Strategically placed, the pages tell of a story I wrote about a memory from the mind of a karmic captain.
It is April 14, 3018, it is 11:30 p.m., a lookout sees a spiral of lit-up stars coming out of a quantum galaxy, dead ahead. A warning bell button is pushed, and the captain of the spacecraft telepathically speaks to the second at the face of the aircraft witnessing the information he has just received.
In that same instance, the captain has a distorted, surreal memory of a painting he saw in 2020 called Across the Pond when he was summoned back to planet earth. It was the outline of an ancient map of Ireland, with pages of paper torn from an 1800’s book. The artist statement read:
across the pond is an ancient map of Ireland and a tribute to those who sailed on the Titanic. It is a mixed media piece composed of all the letters that never reached their intended destinations that night. All the letters that would not be written from the 1503 souls who died. All the letters of the 705 who did survive but could only write their pain, never speak it.
At that same moment, the captain is downloaded with a karmic history of his past. Instantly he knows precisely what to do to correct his historical mistake.
Fast forward to April 14, 4018, where an artist sits in her studio, painting a scene of a captain who saved the souls of many on one historical night…©Jolene Dames.
